Copyright, divorce, death, taxes

Copyrights are property. Like other property, they can be bequethed in a will, mortgaged (if somebody's willing to loan you money on them), sold, rented, given away--and divided up in a divorce settlement.

Most artists treat their copyrights far too carelessly, and problems crop up. Don't wait until your copyrights are valuable before you start treating them seriously. Always keep track of what you've created, how you've protected it, and especially what rights you're keeping, selling, and giving away.
